JM: Did you have regular access to telephones?
Bert: You give thumbprint and then you can make a call. The money would come out of your phone account.
JM: What types of charges applied for calling people? How much money would you guess the average inmate spends per week on phone calls?
Bert: It was very expensive because it was a connection charge of around $2.95 plus the per minute cost after that.
JM: Did you need to buy phone cards to call out?
Bert: When you first get in there your calls are free. But once they settle you in you've got to do the thumbprint and account thing.
JM: Did the jail screen your calls?
Bert: I heard they did from another inmate. He said they record them all.
