Leisure Time

Interview with Erik

JM: What types of facilities were available to help pass the time?
Erik: None. You could play cards, that was really about it. They also had TV with basic channels, about 6 channels.

JM: Did you have regular access to the entertainment or was competition fierce? Give details.
Erik: I didn't really watch much TV because somebody was always watching something. You could buy your own cards from commissary but they were expensive.

JM: Did you have a hard time staying in shape while in jail?
Erik: No not at all. Working out the whole time was what got me through. We would fill garbage cans full of water and do curls with that.

JM: How often did you get to go outside? What did you do outside if you were allowed to? If you were not allowed to go outside what could you do for exercise?
Erik: You could only go outside if you were going out to work or if you were a trustee. Otherwise you didn't go out.

JM: Did the jail offer church services? If so, what were they like and when were they held?
Erik: Once a week they had pastors that came in and talked to the block as a group, but only if the whole block wanted it.
