Telephones

Interview with Matthew, Michelle and Art

JM: Did you have regular access to telephones?
Matthew: We had a single pay phone in the dorm. You could use a calling card to call out to relatives/friends.
Michelle: for the most part yes. for making collect calls or if you have a calling card purchased in comminsary. if you were on a disciplinary lock down though the only phoone privleges you have during that timme are to your lawyer.
Art: Yes whenever the lines were openw

JM: What types of charges applied for calling people? How much money would you guess the average inmate spends per week on phone calls?
Matthew: The cards I used were 5 dollar cards that allowed you 15 mins per $1.40 from the card. I would say the average inmate uses about 10-15 bucks a week on cards.
Michelle: the calls are about $2.00-$2.13 fro a 15 min. call. it was $2.00 for people you were calling collect and $2.13 if you were using a phone card.
Art: Sirus thr company that contracts witht the jai charges per minute or per call is 2.06 and if its out of state.

JM: Did you need to buy phone cards to call out?
Matthew: Yes, every week we had to order them.
Michelle: if the person you wanted to call doesn't accept collect calls, then yes.
Art: Yes you need to uy a phone card or if they accept collect calls

JM: Did the jail screen your calls?
Matthew: Yes, the system used to call was monitored.
Michelle: it tells you after you ecord your name that your call may be monitored or recorded. whether or not they do to every call, i don't truely know.
Art: They screen anything they can
