Medications

Interview with Bill, Rochelle, Joyce, Mikey, Eric, Kirk, Janelle and Claudia

JM: Did you always have access to necessary medications?
Bill: Yes, once you are prescribed them. Getting medical attention necessary to see a doctor is often a monumental task.
Rochelle: yes
Joyce: I was not on any meds
Mikey: no i did not i got 2 infections in there
Eric: Yes; Tylenol was my favorite because it helped me sleep.
Kirk: You have access when you needed it.
Janelle: I didn't need mess, but I heard inmates complain about having to put in a "kite" to get mess but it was hard.
Claudia: I didn't take any medications.

JM: How did you get your medications?
Bill: Medication Cart makes rounds 3 times a day. It is usually very quick and medication nurse often has medication already packaged in bag to distribute immediately.
Rochelle: From the infirmiry
Joyce: I was not on any medications and did not ask for any over the counter medications such as Tylenol or Alka Seltzer
Mikey: they come around on a cart every day and call your name and check your wristband to make sure you are the right person
Eric: If you need medications the jail nurse will dispense them to you. You receive them in a small paper cup with some water for swallowing any pills. They do watch to be sure you don't try to hoard.
Kirk: You have to put in a request to be seen and then the doctor would presribe them to you and they brought them around daily.
Janelle: I seen the nurse come around a few times a day with a cart and the inmates got In a line and got their mess.
Claudia: Even though I didn't receive medications, medications were issued by the nurse. Inmates would come to the block door and be issued medication through a slot. They would have to take the medications in front of the nurse and bring a cup of water. The nurse would check to make sure the inmate swallowed the pill. The inmate would have to stick her tongue out and up.

JM: What types of punishments were incurred for abuse of drugs? Did you ever witness this?
Bill: None that I was aware of.
Rochelle: Jail and lock up
Joyce: I do not know about any drug use or abuse while I was in there. I did not witness any
Mikey: im not quite sure i never did witness anything in that senerion but i would imagine it is pretty strict
Eric: I never witnessed any drug abuse in jail so I never experienced any punishment for drug abuse - or anything else, for that matter.
Kirk: I never saw any one get caught selling or abusing any meds. This was not a big problem that I saw.
Janelle: No I never witnessed that. I do not know what the punishment for some thing like that would be though.
Claudia: Women brought in drugs all the time through stuffing them far up their vagina. Marijuana and crack were smoked. Women didn't get caught. One time a group of young inmates (age 20+) smoked crack and got caught. They were escorted off the floor. I don't know what happened to them.
