Telephones

Interview with Darren

JM: Did you have regular access to telephones?
Darren: Certain hours of the day, yes. It would be about 12 hours that they were accessible each day. That could change if someone acted up they could turn them off.

JM: What types of charges applied for calling people? How much money would you guess the average inmate spends per week on phone calls?
Darren: If you got arrested and had money in your wallet they would put money on your books. Twice a week they would come by with a store call where you could order stuff from the store. YOu could purchase minutes. It was pretty damn expensive. The phone card was $10 and it was good for 10 or 15 minutes. You could call collect, but those charges were even more hideous.

JM: Did you need to buy phone cards to call out?
Darren: You could buy phone cards or call collect.

JM: Did the jail screen your calls?
Darren: They said they could at any time. We always felt they were.
