Closing Advice

Interview with Victor and Mike

JM: What else would you want a friend or family member to know if they have a loved one going to this jail?
Victor: For that person to understand the environment that they are going into, to prepare them for dealing with ignorance on a daily basis. To let them know that the corrections officers are not their friends. To teach them how to navigate the politics and the gangs. To teach them how and when to fight.
Mike: This jail is pretty easy to serve time in. It is not crowded and Sussex County jail has a higher percentage of white people in it than most other jails in the state because of the higher representation in the population at large. So if you are white like me, there is less to be afraid of.

JM: If somebody knows they will be serving time in this jail what is your advice to them?
Victor: To mind their own business, to beat the living shit out of anyone who steals from them, to not provoke the corrections officers and to ignore any disrespect that the COs give to them. I did not ignore the constant disrespect given to me by the correction officers which led to me being ordered to strip naked and then getting beaten by a corrections officer as 5 other COs watched, when I went to prison.
Mike: The best way to spend your time is reading books. Stay away from the kids who think they are really tough and have something to prove. You are not going to make any lifelong friends. The saying is, you come in alone, you go out alone. It is the truth.

JM: Please list any other jail or rehab facilities you have been to.
Victor: I was in the Annandale NJ prison after I was sentenced in Sussex, the Orange County Jail on related charges, then Sonyea Prison for my sentence from Orange County after I finished my time in Annandale. I did five and a half years in one stretch.
Mike: South Woods Northern State
