Telephones

Interview with Victor

JM: Did you have regular access to telephones?
Victor: Yes, there were 2 phones in each block.

JM: What types of charges applied for calling people? How much money would you guess the average inmate spends per week on phone calls?
Victor: I think there was a $5 charge for the first 10 minutes or so, after that it got pretty expensive. Most guys could only afford a few initial calls.

JM: Did you need to buy phone cards to call out?
Victor: No. Not if you were able to call collect, but if that option was not available to you then yes, a phone card was necessary.

JM: Did the jail screen your calls?
Victor: Yes they screened or monitored our calls.
