Interview with Ron, mike and Brian

JM: How long was your sentencing for?
Ron: I WAS SENTENCED FOR 18 MONTHES PROBATION AND COMMUNITY SERVICE TIME. HOWEVER I WAS NEVER ACTUALLY FINED AND DID NOT SERVE ANY COMMUNITY SERVICE FOR ANYONE. AND FURTHERMORE I LITERALLY WALK OUT FROM PROBATION BECAUSE OF THE IGNORANCE OF THE JACKASSES AT THE PROBATION HALL!!! I MEAN WHAT A BUNCH OF NUTHEADS!!! THEY HONESTLY THINK THEY ARE DOING SOMETHING GOOD FOR THE PUBLIC!!!
mike: I had Time served for 42 days and a 300 dollar court costs
Brian: The state offered me 60 days, and I negotiated 45 days. With credit for the time I had served already. I also had to take batters intervention classes, which were 6 months. Along with court fines.

JM: Did you spend time in a holding cell after your sentencing? If so, what was that like? If you didn't where did they they take you instead?
Ron: NO THE JUDGE DEEMED ME NOT TO BE A THREAT TO THE COMMUNITY.
mike: No, i was in a 16 man dorm
Brian: Because I was tasered that night, I had to be monitored for 8 hours in case I had any heart or physical reaction. After these wasted hours of being checked by medical personnel, I was later put up into my cell.

Life On The Inside
What do you do with a jail that's been around since the 1800's? When it can no longer incarcerate prisoners you could turn it into a kind of museum. That's what the Sherriff's department in Clay County, Florida did with their old jail. As for the new jail, that is up and running just fine on Green Cove Springs just off Highway 16 West.

Every inmate who is brought into the Clay County Jail will be issued a handbook that clearly spells out the rules and what is expected of them. For instance, when an inmate is moving in line with other inmates there is to be "No horseplay, no yelling and no talking to anyone encountered en route to your destination. Any deviation from established decorum shall be dealt with immediately." Clearly they mean business.

Speaking of business, each inmate is given access to medical and dental treatment but they are required to make a small co-payment for those visits. If the need arises for them to be taken to an ER or hospital they'll have to pay the actual cost.

The layout of the Clay County Jail consists of cell blocks which have 2 dorms per block. Each of those dorms houses up to 16 inmates. A former inmate commented that this open dorm situation might be nice to move around in, but it also increased the incidents of stealing. To pass the time, inmates are given books or cards. Inmates are occasionally allowed out into the yard, but all they get there is fresh air.

Good Behavior Policy
The good time policy for the county jail system in Florida is 10 days off for every month served. This means if you're sentenced for 30 days and stay out of trouble you could be released in 20 days.

Visitor and Phone Policy
Phone access is granted between 8 a.m. and 10 p.m. The phones are shut off during meals or head counts. If there has been a discipline problem in the dorm then the phones are shut off until things calm down. Inmates can make collect calls, but can't take any calls. The exception is if there is a family emergency on the outside that the inmate has to be informed about.

Inmates are allowed up to 2 hours of visiting time per week. Any visitor coming to see an inmate is asked to show up at least 30 minutes before their scheduled appointment. They will also have to present a valid I.D. and be subjected to a search.
