Pre-sentencing

Interview with Eric

JM: Tell us about the pre-sentencing process:
Eric: I had a bench trail. I was arrested on 1-5-1988 and spent 9 months in Cook County Jail in the drug unit. I only had a public defender representing me. (no help) I was charged with Attempt Murder and Criminal Sexual Assault. I confessed to something I really did't do

JM: Did you have police stop by your house for questioning? If not please give us details on how you came to be arrested.
Eric: I was issued an arrest warrant. The first time they came by, I did not answer the door. The second time they came I tried to jump out the second floor window. But of course they had the apartment surrounded. I had no choice but to give myself up to the detectives.

JM: What was court like? Please give as many details as you recall.
Eric: Going to court is on of the most stressful and depressing feelings a person can encounter. I think I went to court at least 6 times. Each time I had no help from my public defender. My family always came to support me. I hate the court system. I'm free.

JM: What were your original charges? What did you end up being convicted of?
Eric: I was charged with Attempt Murder and Criminal Sexual Assault And convicted on both charges.
