Interview with Bill

JM: How long was your sentencing for?
Bill: the first theft by unlafful taking was 30 days and my second one was 60 days

JM: Did you spend time in a holding cell after your sentencing? If so, what was that like? If you didn't where did they they take you instead?
Bill: yes i did and it was rough in it there is only twelve beds in the holding cell and they put alot more then that in it they put inmates in a holding cell till they are bonded out or go to popalation if you have to go to popaltaion you set in the holding cell for 72 with no shower no tooth brush nothing except toliet paper and you clothes you have on

Life On the Inside
Anyone who works on a correctional staff will tell you that the goal is to keep the inmates safe. In many cases this means keeping them away from each other. This applies to keeping gang members separate from rival gang members, sex offenders in isolation and violent offenders on lockdown.

Passing the Time in McCracken County Jail
While waiting for their release, an inmate at McCracken County Jail can enroll in one or several ongoing self-help programs. For those struggling with addiction issues there is Alcoholics Anonymous or Narcotics Anonymous.

For those who want to finish their high school education an inmate can earn their GED certification. There is also a special program called Freedom Forever Ministries which teaches life skills that help inmates cope with the day to day challenges they might face when they return to society.

In between classes inmates can watch TV, play cards, read and socialize. There is a weekly commissary offered to inmates for them purchase the kind of items they think they might not be able to survive without such as candy, soda and chips. They can also buy things like cards, paper and pens.

Good Behavior Policy
At the McCracken County Jail good behavior reductions are award for prisoners who are engaged in a work or improvement program. In other words, sitting around on your bunk all day isn't going to get you out any earlier. For those who do participate they can receive one day off for every five days served.

Visit and Telephone Policy
Inmates are allowed one 15 minute visit each week. However, if an inmate gets into trouble between the visits those sessions can be cancelled. Visitors should arrive to the jail at least a half an hour before the scheduled visit time in order to be properly check-in and searched. Visitors are not allowed to bring anything from the outside into the jail so it is best to leave everything in your car.

The 15 minute rule also applies to phone calls which the inmates are allowed to make from their cell blocks. These are outgoing collect calls which cost around $2.00 per each call just to make the connection.
