Interview with Ryan
JM: Did you find it difficult to get along with other inmates? Please give examples to explain why you did or didn't.
Ryan: Not at first. I tried to mainly blend in. I would
try to play cards spades, cribbage and rummy 500.
It was hard to see everyone just acting so
hostile. I am gay and pretty tolerant but at many
times felt afraid of how people would talk or act
or say they would do to a gay guy.
JM: What types of things did you have to do to avoid problems or fights with other inmates?
Ryan: I would just stay busy reading or playing cards
with people I knew where safe. Sometimes I would
just stay in my bunk and just avoid interaction
with anyone. I would go to church or rec to try
and stay busy
JM: Were you able to choose an inmate as your cellmate if you knew one? How often would your cellmate(s) change?
Ryan: NO
