JM: How long was your sentencing for?
Evan: 25 days was the sentance i recieved

JM: Did you spend time in a holding cell after your sentencing? If so, what was that like? If you didn't where did they they take you instead?
Evan: No I did not spend time in a holding cell.

Life On The Inside
Head south east down the 175 highway out of Dallas and you'll come upon Kaufman County. The Kaufman County Sheriff's department has been charged with protecting the public and maintaining the detention facilities.

According to their website mission statement: "The operational philosophy of the detention facility provides inmates with opportunities for self-improvement and release of tension. These include educational, visitation and work programs, recreational activities, and religious services. Access to special programs also serves as a management tool, as participation is contingent upon acceptable inmate behavior." Basically, that means that the best way for inmates to do their time is to stay busy and stay out of trouble.

The inmates are housed in several cell blocks at Kaufman County Jail. All effort is made to separate the violent offenders from the non-violent offenders. Along with the various educational and vocational training programs, inmates have access to a gym, reading materials and a television. They also are allowed out into the recreational yard at least three times a week.

If there is one commonality you'll find among inmates its distaste for the meals served in any detention center. Kaufman County is no different. When a former inmate was asked what their least favorite food was they simply replied, "All the food was my least favorite."

Good Behavior Policy
Inmates in the Texas penal system are granted good behavior time reduction off their sentence. This is based on which classification they are in terms of their offence or prison problems. In other words, an inmate could start out as Class I and receive up to 15 days off for every month served. However, if they get into serious trouble they could be demoted to Class IV where they will lose all their good behavior time.

Visitor and Telephone Policy
Inmates in Kaufman County Jail are granted two 25 minute visits each week. However, these visits are only one per day. Minor children are only allowed to visit on the weekends. All visitors must present a valid photo ID in order to be allowed into the visitation center.

Visitors aren't allowed to bring any items into the visit room. In terms of phone calls, inmates are granted access to make collect calls from their cell blocks. The charge is $10 for a connection and $0.75 for each minute thereafter.
