Leisure Time

Interview with Rachel

JM: What types of facilities were available to help pass the time?
Rachel: On each unit was a day room where they have tv and play two movies a week. You can have your own TV and walkman. You can order those kind of things or have your family bring them to you. They also have yard time. And you could get a job or learn a trade or both.

JM: Did you have regular access to the entertainment or was competition fierce? Give details.
Rachel: It was pretty open. When you first go there, you can sign up for a class that interests you. They also make sure you get your GED if you don't have one.

JM: Did you have a hard time staying in shape while in jail?
Rachel: Yes.

JM: How often did you get to go outside? What did you do outside if you were allowed to? If you were not allowed to go outside what could you do for exercise?
Rachel: Yard time was in afternoon and evening every day, unless we were on lockdown. Then we couldn't go out for a week at a time.

JM: Did the jail offer church services? If so, what were they like and when were they held?
Rachel: Yes they did. They were held in the gym and chapel. The church service was really inspiring. Really good.
