Pre-sentencing

Interview with Roderick and Liza

JM: Tell us about the pre-sentencing process:
Roderick: Pretty much everything done in Sedgwick County is done thru a "kite" process. For pre- sentencing you are given a questionaire asking things such as family members names and addresses, education, previous criminal history, mental and psyical illnesses and any drug or alcohol addictions and or treatments as well as any mental health therapy.

JM: Did you have police stop by your house for questioning? If not please give us details on how you came to be arrested.
Roderick: The police came to my house and "requested" that I go with them to the municipal courthouses 6th floor which is the financial crimes floor. The "request" wasn't really a request at all since if I had refused to accompany them then they would have cuffed me and detained me for questioning.
Liza: Years ago when I was younger a single mother and struggling to make it I got some tickets I couldn't pay for, that caused me to have a suspended license. In order to be able to go to work, take kids to doctor etc I had to continue to drive, which caused me to get several driving while suspended. Every driving while suspended gets you a trip to jail, get enough of them it leads to probation. I was recently arrested in Miami Ok, as a passenger and found out I had a warrant in Wichita KS for driving while revoked. They extradited me back to Wichita for that unbelievable.

JM: What was court like? Please give as many details as you recall.
Roderick: I was placed on Pretrial Services which is a program that allows you to be released from jail and to report to an intense supervised release officer on a weekly, and for some, daily basis. My first appearance was my preliminary hearing and by the time you get to that stage you pretty much already know what your judgment is going to be and what your sentence will be based a sentencing grid your attorney gives you.
Liza: Court was ok for the most part, the court system just does what it was meant for, to serve justice.

JM: What were your original charges? What did you end up being convicted of?
Liza: Driving while suspended, driving while revoked
