Reviews for Rikers Island

Reviews by Lisa and JennyGirl

JM: Which jail did you visit?
Lisa: I visted vcbc in the bronx ny.
JennyGirl: EMTC (formally CIFM C-76) at Rikers Island

JM: How long ago was your visit?
Lisa: this is going on now.
JennyGirl: My last visit was a 2 weeks ago! October 9, 2011. It would have been this past weekend but the schedule got mixed up

JM: How many times did you visit?
Lisa: 4 months 3 times a week with the exception of like 3 or 4 visits the most but not intintenaly at all.
JennyGirl: 1-2 visits per week! I share the visits with my boyfriends mother! Since I work during the week he usually doesn't use his allotted 3 visits per week! He was actually told he was only permitted 2 per week but found out a month after he started his sentencing he was allowed 3 visits because he is actually in the custody of Suffolk County abd not NYS! He was placed at Rikers due to over crowding at Riverhead County Jail

JM: How do you go about making an appointment to see an inmate?
Lisa: For me it was more like scheduald by last name so if the persons last name was prise then it would be m-z or brown would be A-L you get it but not all jails work that way.
JennyGirl: No appointments are allowed! Visits are scheduled by inmates last name A-L and M-Z Wednesdays and Thursday, Saturdays and Sundays alternating! Friday us the only day where all inmates are allowed visits! It's difficult when sharing visits because of the alternating schedule.

JM: How long did check-in process take?
Lisa: some times it takes 35 mins and some times 4 hours to even see the inmate.
JennyGirl: This is an all day event. Do not make plans elsewhere if you are visiting! I drive in from Long Island which takes about an hour. Then you have to wait for the Q100 bus to transport you to the island! If your lucky you can make it to the bus terminal for each facility within an hour! Sometimes it takes longer if something has gone wrong on the island! After passing the first search checkpoint you must go to the designated area for the bus to transport you to the correct facility. You must check in and get your visiting pass! If it is your first time the process can take up to 30 minutes because you need to be registered, finger scanned and have your photo taken. After checking in you must wait for the bus! My last visit I waited almost 45 min before they came to pick us up! Upon arrival at the facility you are again sent through the metal detectors! Time varies on how many visitors are there! Then you must wait to have any packages you have brought to your loved one and then are physically searched by a CO! I would estimate around 2 hrs from arrival at the facility until actually starting my visit!

JM: Were the guards accommodating?
Lisa: some of the guard are realy rud and some are ok
JennyGirl: I feel that most guards are rude and treat you as a criminal! There are a few that I have encountered that were helpful but majority are not! You are looked down upon as a disgrace for associating with an inmate. Also while being searched it depends on the guards discression whether what you are wearing is appropriate! If they decide that they do not like what you wear they make you wear a fluerescent green shirt to cover up.

JM: What was the visiting environment like?
JennyGirl: Visiting is very dirty! Around the outside lockers when you first arrive it smells of urine! While they do provide hand sanitizing stations, many are left empty! The bathrooms usually do not have toilet paper, are unable to flush and empty soap containers! During one visit I noticed a roach crawling across the floor

JM: How long was your visit? Did the guards ever allow you to take extra time?
Lisa: ther are a lot of diffrent people and familys. a round table two 2-3 chairs and one inmate chair face front of the visitors.
JennyGirl: Your allowed 1 hr visit! I have berm told I can get extended visits because I live mire than an hour away! I wad told to bring gas receipts but have yet to have been given an extended visit! I am always directed to speak to someone else to request time! I get the run around each time!

JM: What was the parking situation like?
Lisa: N\A
JennyGirl: Since I drive in I try and park in the lot designated right before the bridge but if your not there early be prepaired to park several blocks away! Bring change for meters! Also upon return the bus does NOT take you back to the lot! It drops you off 2 blocks away and you must walk back to the lot!

JM: What advice would you offer to somebody who is going to visit an inmate in this jail?
Lisa: Make sure you have patience and time befor going make shure the visit is that day make sure he's still there even if you just spoke to him.or her dont bring any weapons some times vaceline lotion gum and of course no drugs allowed dont smuggle plz it's not worth it at all oh youll be search at least two time and were clean socks and undys
JennyGirl: Plan on it being an all day event! Bring lots of quarters! You must pay $2.25 for the Q100 bus! You also need quarters for outside lockers abd inside lockers! Try to dress appropriately! Wear undergarments, no ripped jeans, hoodies, layers, no leggings or shorts! Dresses & skirts cannot be more than 2" above the knee! Also no metal hair pins, Hewlett (except wedding bands or religious pendants) while everyone likes to look nice, dress comfortable because it is a long day! Do not bring makeup and leave electronics in you vehicle! Just listen to the officers because they will give you a hard time for not bringing cooperative and it delays the whole process! Also those who are asthmatic you ARE allowed to bring your inhaler into the visit! That is the one thing I fought about hard! It will be locked up but you will recieve a Medical Life Saving pass! EMTC is very strict so really just follow the rules! I have seen to many people be denied after hours of waiting!
