Interview with Nelson, Chris and Brad

JM: How many different blocks were there?
Nelson: Honestly, I couldn't tell you how many sections. In the workhouse there were 8 floors. I think on each floor there were about 5 bays.
Chris: Each block in Franklin county housed about 50 to 100 guys. NOt sure how many blocks but when I was there they were placing people on the floor
Brad: There were about 12.different blocks

JM: Did they have names? If so, what were they?
Nelson: They are named by floors, and east, north, west or south. Then each area in each of those sections had a number.
Chris: They named the blocks by letters I, E, D, k,
Brad: They were named by the.floor your on first then the direction the pod is facing then a tank number ex. 2west5

JM: Which types of inmates were housed in the different blocks?
Nelson: Because of overcrowding, everyone was kind of mixed in together. I was told it wasn't supposed to go like that. Medical bay was on the first floor. Jackson Pike is all workhouse. The workhouse is all work within the jail. It's just extra housing, overflow from the other jail. The trip to and from court is horrible. Its not like you are being abused but the conditions are horrible...being chained on your wrists and ankles, this is not a good experience. Its cold and cramped on the bus. You are shackled to another guy. Its even cold in the summertime.
Chris: They placed you in blocks based upon your crime. Felony child support went in with felony murder charges. They placed non-violent with violent offenders. Child molestors had their own spot
Brad: Sex offenders were.housed in different units because if they werent people would beat them up regularly.. also weak inmates were.housed in whats called protective custody so they didnt get beat up

JM: What do you remember being the nicest and worst parts about the different blocks?
Nelson: The medical was the best at Jackson Pike. We pretty much had good behavior in there, so they gave us extra food quite often. That's a privilege.
Chris: Nicest part getting out..........nothing good. Its worse dealing with CO'd than inmates. It was intimidating being in prison for child support and sitting next to a guy who just murdered his wife. We were placed in the same block becuase we committed a felony and not a misdemeanor. It was rough
Brad: The nicest part of a.block depends on the people in it sometimes you would get in a block with laid back people thay didnt want trouble but very seldom that happened the worst was when you got put in a tank with a bujch of younger kids that wanted to fight a lot
