JM: Which jail did you visit?
Tess: York county,PA

JM: How long ago was your visit?
Tess: 15 minutes

JM: How many times did you visit?
Tess: only once, so far

JM: How do you go about making an appointment to see an inmate?
Tess: visiting hours are pre-scheduled daily. upon arriving to the jail, i signed my name on the visitors log, was verified as a registered visitor, and was instructed which of the half hour time slots i would be allowed to visit.

JM: How long did check-in process take?
Tess: not even 5 minutes, very efficient. impressive.the security scan line went quickly and smoothly.

JM: Were the guards accommodating?
Tess: the guards were excellent ! they were friendly and very informative. both were joking, yet competent in their duties. one even went out of his way to try to help a man that had arrived too late to vist that day.

JM: What was the visiting environment like?
Tess: exactly like i pictured it would be. speaking on a telephone, separated by glass, presumably bullet-proof. the noise level was surprisingly quiet. i expected tobe able to hear neighboring conversations, but was not able to. the small wooden stool-like seat was even comfortable for me, as a plus size woman.

JM: How long was your visit? Did the guards ever allow you to take extra time?
Tess: my visit was 15 minuted because i split the half hour slot with a friend visting. no extra time was allowed because the time slots were already booked solid.

JM: What was the parking situation like?
Tess: great parking, very short walk to the visitors entrance.

JM: What advice would you offer to somebody who is going to visit an inmate in this jail?
Tess: arrive early, follow the rules. the posted signs stating 'do not bring in cell phones' means do not bring in cell phones - you will be asked to leave nicely, but firmly, by the guards. let your inmate talk and ramble if they want to. this is all they have to look forward to, leave all of your problems at the door. compared to your issues, their problems are monmental. feeling a total lack of freedom and privacy is about as down as it can get for most folks. please respect that about all inmates. regardless of the reason(s) that landed them in the circumstances they are in, they are still people.
