Leisure Time

Interview with nelson and Amy

JM: What types of facilities were available to help pass the time?
nelson: TV.
Amy: going outside to the patio, walking, reading, tv classes, games cards letter writing. I had recovery classes 5 days a week, another class that is probation based called "Thinking For Change" a writing class given by a volunteer journalist from the community, choir comes in fridays, a reading and arts lit group on day a week, and a class on Spirituality once a week as well.

JM: Did you have regular access to the entertainment or was competition fierce? Give details.
nelson: The mexicans pretty much made us watch soccer until one got shanked.
Amy: I was a pod worker so we had our own TV room and every one pretty much agreed on what to watch. The general population argued a bit over programs but mostly they all wanted to watch the same stuff. Also There were plenty of movies to put into the dvd players

JM: Did you have a hard time staying in shape while in jail?
nelson: no.
Amy: Yes that was the worst. I didn't even over eat and have always been in great shape. I gained 15 pounds and still 6 moths later I feel my body is still recovering from the lack of movement and shitty beds, unhealthy balanced diet.

JM: How often did you get to go outside? What did you do outside if you were allowed to? If you were not allowed to go outside what could you do for exercise?
nelson: for 30 minutes each day.
Amy: We could walk around and that's about it. we were able to get out about 4 hours a day. Sometimes more and being a pod worker even more.

JM: Did the jail offer church services? If so, what were they like and when were they held?
nelson: no.
Amy: Yes two different ones on Sundays and one on a tuesday evening.Boring and not many inmates attended. Not to inspiring.
