Telephones

Interview with Eric

JM: Did you have regular access to telephones?
Eric: I didn't have any access to a telephone in North County facility until I was housed in the cell

JM: What types of charges applied for calling people? How much money would you guess the average inmate spends per week on phone calls?
Eric: The charges for a phone call or something like 250 for the first minute and $.15 for each minute after that with a maximum of 60 minutes. I had more than one 60 minute phone call every week and so do a lot of inmates but other inmates only spend maybe one phone call or don't call anybody because they're locked up for a long time

JM: Did you need to buy phone cards to call out?
Eric: I don't need phone call cards because everybody I know put money on their own phone

JM: Did the jail screen your calls?
Eric: They say that all the calls can be monitored and recorded.
