Leisure Time

Interview with Carol

JM: What types of facilities were available to help pass the time?
Carol: we had a tv but none of the guards would ever let us turn it on, they are high on the wall and very hard to hear. they had a cart of books, some of the books were ok but most were romance novels. You could buy cards from the store. they had a few board games mon like monopoly, uno, checkers

JM: Did you have regular access to the entertainment or was competition fierce? Give details.
Carol: yes except for the tv. most people bought their own cards and played with them and really didnt mess with the other games. there was a basketball also and yes folks would run after it. then they would go to the rec area and no one else could go out.

JM: Did you have a hard time staying in shape while in jail?
Carol: no i ended up not eating any of the bread and i would walk up the steps several times at freetime

JM: How often did you get to go outside? What did you do outside if you were allowed to? If you were not allowed to go outside what could you do for exercise?
Carol: a few times a day.. we were only allowed to exersize outside. we could walk inside but that was about it. we would just walk around outside

JM: Did the jail offer church services? If so, what were they like and when were they held?
Carol: yes they had two different churches that came to out pod. I tried to go to one service but the room was really crowded and I had to leave.
