Inmates

Interview with Mr. Guero

JM: Did you find it difficult to get along with other inmates? Please give examples to explain why you did or didn't.
Mr. Guero: Yes and no it wasn't like my first rodeo. I'm a big white boy so yes other inmates would try and see how far they could push me. I would only get into fights if someone was trying to disrespect me.

JM: What types of things did you have to do to avoid problems or fights with other inmates?
Mr. Guero: Just basically if you show respect and no weakness your cool. I mean the first time I went to the joint a old timer schooled me and told me to stick with my own race, not to gamble if I couldn't pay what was owed right then and there. Don't buy drugs on credit.

JM: Were you able to choose an inmate as your cellmate if you knew one? How often would your cellmate(s) change?
Mr. Guero: I've done this before by paying off the housing clerk. Son for the most part I would be celled up with home boys. This time I was in a dorm setting.
