Leisure Time

Interview with Troy

JM: What types of facilities were available to help pass the time?
Troy: They have classes you can take. They have stuff you can do on a block with freedom, you can play chess, cards, watch movies (VHS). Sometimes the officers would bring in DVDS to watch.

JM: Did you have regular access to the entertainment or was competition fierce? Give details.
Troy: You have to share the TV with other peoples so it was somewat hard to acces. They had enough games for everybody so it wasn't a big deal.

JM: Did you have a hard time staying in shape while in jail?
Troy: I found it more difficult to eat than to stay in shape because I was stressing about what was happening on the outside.

JM: How often did you get to go outside? What did you do outside if you were allowed to? If you were not allowed to go outside what could you do for exercise?
Troy: We went outside once a week. It sucked because they had a basketball rim but no basketball. I was on the block with 60 people and it was hot outside, and most of them barely showered. So after we went outside the smell was bad.

JM: Did the jail offer church services? If so, what were they like and when were they held?
Troy: I didn't attend. They were held Saturdays between 12-5. Sometimes they would come on Sundays too.
