Telephones

Interview with Travis and Grant

JM: Did you have regular access to telephones?
Travis: You could have access during pod times which was maybe 0 hours one day a week, two hours two days a week, and 4 hours the rest of the days.
Grant: just about every day at pod time

JM: What types of charges applied for calling people? How much money would you guess the average inmate spends per week on phone calls?
Travis: You could either call collect (or with a phone card). By the end of my time there phone cards were no longer being sold. It was expensive, I think maybe 1-2 dollars a minute and with a phone card, just connecting the call cost 3 dollars.
Grant: I believe about 5 dollars per call so id say average was 50 - 75 dollars a week

JM: Did you need to buy phone cards to call out?
Travis: Only if you want to be the one who pays. Otherwise you could call collect (there is a limit after which the recipient has to establish an account paid by credit card).
Grant: no you could call using jail opperator

JM: Did the jail screen your calls?
Travis: I was informed that this is the case. The wall says 'phone calls may be monitored'. They even listen in on the cells sometimes.
Grant: yes all calls are recorded
