Telephones

Interview with Carol

JM: Did you have regular access to telephones?
Carol: yes and no... there were approximately 90 women in the block. even if they let half out at a time there was only 4 phones, and one didnt work half the time.

JM: What types of charges applied for calling people? How much money would you guess the average inmate spends per week on phone calls?
Carol: they were expensive. if you bought a calling card it was $10 and you could make one phone call from it. if someone adds money to their phone so you can call collect they add $ 25.00 min and a 6.95 fee

JM: Did you need to buy phone cards to call out?
Carol: they had phone cards but you could also have someone add money to their phone on the outside..it was alot better deal than using the card.

JM: Did the jail screen your calls?
Carol: some i know because the guard told me she heard my husband on the other end getting frustrated trying to add time to the phone.
