Telephones

Interview with Cody and Nicole

JM: Did you have regular access to telephones?
Cody: Yes. They have a new thing called a kiosk. It's a little store on the computer. For phone, if I had money on my books, I could put money on the phone to make calls.
Nicole: There was not regular access to telephones. You could only use them during certain hours, and there was usually a long line.

JM: What types of charges applied for calling people? How much money would you guess the average inmate spends per week on phone calls?
Cody: 6am to 1pm is $3 for 1 minute. 2pm-7pm its $2/minute. 8pm-10:30pm is 75cents. I didn't know that when I got there so I would call in the morning all the time.
Nicole: To call people, it was25 cents for one minute of talk. It cost $3 just to connect the phone call. Per week, I couldve easily spent 50 bucks on the phone and thats IF I only use one phone call a day.

JM: Did you need to buy phone cards to call out?
Cody: No, you put money on your phone account from money on your books.
Nicole: You did not need to buy phone cards. You would just have to transfer comissary funds onto the phone before using.

JM: Did the jail screen your calls?
Cody: Yes, they were recording the calls.
Nicole: The jail did screen calls.
