Telephones

Interview with Tina

JM: Did you have regular access to telephones?
Tina: There is no regular access to anything in jail. There were phones, yes. But, 4 phones, shared with about about 50 some females, waiting, staring at you while you talk, trying to make personal or legal calls, upset at times, constant pressure to get off the phone. Upsetting when I'd hang up and remember everything I hadn't covered during my call.

JM: What types of charges applied for calling people? How much money would you guess the average inmate spends per week on phone calls?
Tina: It's the called party that has to accept the collect call. I don't know what the rates are per call/minute. I do know that local calls were charged at whatever rate that is.

JM: Did you need to buy phone cards to call out?
Tina: No, I did have to enter my inmate number to make a call. Eventually, towards the end of my "stay", HCDC changed to a different phone system. Each inmate had to go to the phone and an outside company came in and punched in our inmate number and we spoke into the phone to record our voice (recognition).

JM: Did the jail screen your calls?
Tina: Yes, all calls were recorded.
