Meals

Interview with Sam

JM: How many meals did you get per day?
Sam: I was given 3 meals every day.

JM: How would you rate the food? Please give details of why.
Sam: The meals consisted mostly of fruits or vegetables. Allegan is surrounded by farm land, and I imagine that the local farmers can easily sell their locally grown produce to the jail. The 'ripeness' of the fresh fruit wasn't always acceptable. The vegetables always seemed better than exceptional. Any meat served to us was deemed to be mystery meat, because even though we couldn't tell exactly what animal it came from, it was certainly meat, or processed meat.

JM: Did you have any favorite/least favorite meals?
Sam: My favorite meal was breakfast. Breakfast was simply a cold milk, a bowl of cereal, a few sugar packets, an orange or apple, and 2 boiled eggs. My least favorite was the lima bean and 'ham' chunk concoction. I love lima beans, but not ham or 'ham'.

JM: Were there any other snacks offered outside of meals? What was commissary like and how expensive was it?
Sam: Commissary was available to the inmates. I did not receive any commissary because I had no money. I was given some commissary items by some of the inmates as a trade for some of my meals. Whatever commissary item I acquired was the same quality that could be found on a store shelf, and I never heard any complaints about the price.
