JM: Did you have regular access to telephones? Rachel: YES Paula: Yes, there was a phone in the cell. Lindsey: Yes. There was one phone in each tank and as long as
another inmate wasn't on it you could use it from
the time breakfast was over to the time dinner was
over. They did however cut the phones off during
meals.
JM: What types of charges applied for calling people? How much money would you guess the average inmate spends per week on phone calls? Rachel: WHEREEVER YOU CALLED, THEY HAD TO PAY A FEE FOR
THE CARRIER THAT PROVIDED THEJAIL-CALLS, AND
THEN THE CALLS WOUL COME IN COLLECT, EXPENSIVE.
ALSO THERE WERE TIME LIMITS. Paula: Any inmate could use the phone. The average call
was about $3.75 for 15 minutes. I would estimate
the average weekly costs per inmate was around
$11.25 Lindsey: The charges for phone calls were VERY expensive. my
mom couldn't even afford to start up a service plan
with them because it just simply cost way too much!!
In general I believe it was like $20 per phone call
so if yo made 5 calls a week it would be $100 a
week!!
JM: Did you need to buy phone cards to call out? Rachel: I WAS NEVER OFFERED THAT CHOICE. Paula: No, all calls were collect calls Lindsey: I did not need to buy phone cards because oyu set up
some plan with service compan that he phone was
through.
JM: Did the jail screen your calls? Rachel: ARE YOU KIDDING?? OF COURSE THEY DID. Paula: They could record all calls Lindsey: Yes I am pretty sure they did. It said en the
automated voice came on that you were being
recorded, but some inmates were still dumb enough
to talk about illegal things and talk bad abut
certain guards over the phone!!
