Inmates

Interview with Harry and Arnold

JM: Did you find it difficult to get along with other inmates? Please give examples to explain why you did or didn't.
Harry: For the most part I got along with everyone. However you did have some people in jail that just wanted to start and cause problems for entertainment. But mainly I did not have very many problems.
Arnold: For the most part I got along with everyone. I basically kept to myself and tried to avoid the negative inmates. You could basically tell who was trouble and who was not.

JM: What types of things did you have to do to avoid problems or fights with other inmates?
Harry: Well basically I kept to myself and normally did not speak to anyone unless they had happened to speak to me first. Also after some time you could pretty much tell who we're the inmates that were the troublemakers so to speak, and I would basically just avoid them whenever possible.
Arnold: Well for me I basically kept to myself and read, wrote letters, exercised, went to Bible study and church. Also I would watch TV when we were permitted to do so. Again to avoid fights and conflict I basically just kept to myself or just associated with Christian inmates and positive inmates.

JM: Were you able to choose an inmate as your cellmate if you knew one? How often would your cellmate(s) change?
Harry: No. You were for the most part not allowed to pick and choose who would be your cellmate. However sometimes if you had favor with the guards, they would change cellmates for you. Your cellmate would basically only change if they were either getting released or moved to another block.
Arnold: You were not able to pick and choose your cellmates. The guards would however make cell changes if there was constant conflict between cellmates. My cellmates only changed when the got moved to another block or released.
