Telephones

Interview with Earl

JM: Did you have regular access to telephones?
Earl: Yes, there was four phones to each cell block.

JM: What types of charges applied for calling people? How much money would you guess the average inmate spends per week on phone calls?
Earl: Well for me I had to call out of county so it cost me almost fifteen dollars a call. I would like to say for local calls it was about two dollars for a call. I would say the average local inmate spends around twenty five to thirty five dollars a week.

JM: Did you need to buy phone cards to call out?
Earl: No, before I got out they had phone cards available but you could still call out with out one.

JM: Did the jail screen your calls?
Earl: Yes, every call you made was screened by the jail.
