Leisure Time

Interview with Luke

JM: What types of facilities were available to help pass the time?
Luke: Facilities to help pass the time were mainly the library which consisted of a book cart with more romance novels than anything.Cruel and unusual punishment if you ask me.I for one dont want to read a romance novel living with a bunch of guys and activity time which consisted of going outdoors to walk or play basketball.

JM: Did you have regular access to the entertainment or was competition fierce? Give details.
Luke: Yes we had regular access to entertainment but the competition was fierce. Everyone would fight about what to watch or what game to play. Some times it would even start a physical match between inmates or groups. Your best bet was to read or get a partner and play cards.

JM: Did you have a hard time staying in shape while in jail?
Luke: never..nothn but time while you are in there so you could do sit ups and push ups all day everyday

JM: How often did you get to go outside? What did you do outside if you were allowed to? If you were not allowed to go outside what could you do for exercise?
Luke: i hr each day during week if we were lucky..mostly basket ball and walking. If not able to go outside you would walk the block inside or situps and push ups

JM: Did the jail offer church services? If so, what were they like and when were they held?
Luke: Yes,,services were once a week and were non denominational. Sometimes it was the highlight of my week. I feel they should have more services.
