Telephones

Interview with Tom and Barbara

JM: Did you have regular access to telephones?
Tom: On most modules it is 23 hour lockdown so you only have an hour to shower, use the phone and take care of all your business. So although you do have access to phones, it is rough unless you are a trustee or you are on T module
Barbara: As long as you stayed good you could make as many calls as you wanted when you were on your free time

JM: What types of charges applied for calling people? How much money would you guess the average inmate spends per week on phone calls?
Tom: The company that provides the phones is called Global Tel-Link and they charge your family like $1.25 just to connect the collect call if it is local. A 30 minute local call runs about $6.00. Anything out of the area code is $3.00 to connect and like $15.00 for a 30 minute call. It is very outrageous.
Barbara: had to do collect calls. pretty expensive. Most inmates probably spent $25 week on calls

JM: Did you need to buy phone cards to call out?
Tom: This jail does not offer that service.
Barbara: not allowed to. collect calls only

JM: Did the jail screen your calls?
Tom: Yes this jail monitors and or records every call.
Barbara: All calls had a recording stated that they were being recorded
