Interview with Tyrone

JM: How many different blocks were there?
Tyrone: There were 5. Two in the Special Housing Unit, two for the dorms (arranged by the age of the inmates) and one for women.

JM: Did they have names? If so, what were they?
Tyrone: No, they didn't refer to them by name. The SHU had an upstairs and a downstairs.

JM: Which types of inmates were housed in the different blocks?
Tyrone: The dorms, as I mentioned earlier, were arranged by the age of the inmate. If you were over 40, you were placed into one side of the dorm and everyone else went into the louder, more violent yourger side. The SHU lower unit was reserved for the most violent inmates or those in need of protective custody. The upper was just a general population tier.

JM: What do you remember being the nicest and worst parts about the different blocks?
Tyrone: I spent the majority of my time (all but 8 days) in the upper SHU. We were the very last ones to receive our meals, and so most every meal was ice-cold. Of course, being locked down was not much fun either. On the good side, I was offered much solitude to read or write as I saw fit. In the dorms, you actually have a large area to roam and 30 others to converse with. Plus, they got their meals first.
