Telephones

Interview with Tyrone

JM: Did you have regular access to telephones?
Tyrone: Yes, during the times we were allowed to leave our cells, (about 4 hours every other day)

JM: What types of charges applied for calling people? How much money would you guess the average inmate spends per week on phone calls?
Tyrone: I personally never used the telephones. I knew they were terribly expensive to the persons receiving the calls, and since I had no idea how lng I would be there, I simply chose not to communicate in that fashion. I had heard of others who would spend hundreds of dollard a week on calls made, though.

JM: Did you need to buy phone cards to call out?
Tyrone: No, it was strictly collect calls only.

JM: Did the jail screen your calls?
Tyrone: Every single word. One person was convicted of their crime through the admission he made over the hone to an accomplice.
