Leisure Time

Interview with Raymond

JM: What types of facilities were available to help pass the time?
Raymond: No weights, just pull up or dip bars. They had handball, that was a big thing. And basketball. Inside there was cards, games and TV. Most of the time inside I was playing pinochle.

JM: Did you have regular access to the entertainment or was competition fierce? Give details.
Raymond: Yes, we got to go out quite a bit. We had morning, afternoon and night time in the yard.

JM: Did you have a hard time staying in shape while in jail?
Raymond: Not at all. WIth the kind of food they sell at the canteen like Top Rammen noodles it was easy to supplement your meals to have some carbs to work out with. Working out is also good for the mind cause it keeps you busy.

JM: How often did you get to go outside? What did you do outside if you were allowed to? If you were not allowed to go outside what could you do for exercise?
Raymond: Quite a bit of time out. 8 to 10 am, 11:30am to 4pm then 6pm to 9 pm

JM: Did the jail offer church services? If so, what were they like and when were they held?
Raymond: By law they have to offer church servies. There was a building off the yard that they used for a chapel.
