Leisure Time

Interview with Lance

JM: What types of facilities were available to help pass the time?
Lance: Books, TV, cards. They used to have boardgames but they took that out while I was there. Not one cold drink.

JM: Did you have regular access to the entertainment or was competition fierce? Give details.
Lance: You can buy cards on commissary. I only went to the library once the whole time I was there so yes, its hard to get books. But inmates just pass the books around.

JM: Did you have a hard time staying in shape while in jail?
Lance: All you do is sit in a room all day and eat bread with every meal. You go to rec once a week for an hour, in a concrete block room outside. One basketball and hoop for 150 people.

JM: How often did you get to go outside? What did you do outside if you were allowed to? If you were not allowed to go outside what could you do for exercise?
Lance: Once a week for an hour at a time. If it was hot or cold or looked like it was going to rain they made up every excuse in the book of why they couldn't do rec.

JM: Did the jail offer church services? If so, what were they like and when were they held?
Lance: Catholic and Christian church. They have it on Sunday and Catholic on Saturday.
