Telephones

Interview with Matthew

JM: Did you have regular access to telephones?
Matthew: We did have regular access to telephones whenever we were out in the dayroom.

JM: What types of charges applied for calling people? How much money would you guess the average inmate spends per week on phone calls?
Matthew: To use the phones in Kane County Jail there were three different ways to call. First, you can buy a 'phone card ' from the commissary. With a phone card you can call any house phone or cell phone. I think they cost $12 for 30 minutes. The next option is for somebody on the outside to setup an account on their phone number and all the charges get billed to that account which had to have money already put on it. When the account was empty you could not call that number. The last way was to call collet drirectly which was billed on the home telephone bill. You had to have a land line because cell phones can not take collect calls.

JM: Did you need to buy phone cards to call out?
Matthew: You did not HAVE to buy phone cards.

JM: Did the jail screen your calls?
Matthew: As far as I know all jails and prisons screen the calls. I do know that Kane County Jail did screen all calls.
