Good Behavior

Interview with Tina

JM: Did you get off early based on good behavior?
Tina: At HCDC you do earn time off—early release, based on classes you could take. I took the classes, to hope for an earlier release, but also to pass time and keep my mind working. Well, early release didn't work in my favor due to another misprint in the newspaper!! One misprint was FTA, (failure to appear) in court in PA, because I was incarcerated at HCDC. Once I left there, MD printed I was a fugitive. So no, I didn't get an early release. Also, since I was extradited, I was at the mercy of PA picking me up.

JM: What is the most time off you can receive for good behavior?
Tina: To the best of my knowledge, 5 days for the GED course.

JM: What types of actions do you need to avoid in order to get time off? Did you ever witness somebody losing time off for good behavior?
Tina: You need to avoid not doing what a CO tells you to do. You need to always make sure your bunk is made, nothing in windowsills, no contraband, address them with respect. I actually made my bed 6 1/2 times in one day because each time I sat to write, read, walk to talk to someone, phone, eat, and even go talk to the CO, etc., it must be made. Be aware of your surroundings constantly, and never walk behind a CO without them knowing. Yes, I witnessed many inmates lose "good time" because they got too comfortable or disrespectful.
