Interview with Dale

JM: How many different blocks were there?
Dale: In kalamazoo county there were 6 wings/blocks. In Jackson prison, there were a total of 16 blocks at one point in time.

JM: Did they have names? If so, what were they?
Dale: Kalamazoo county- A West, B West, A North, B North, A South, & B South. Jackson Prison- The blocks were numbered 1 through 16

JM: Which types of inmates were housed in the different blocks?
Dale: Protective Custody, SPON (for inmates who had testified against another person involved in their particular case and was being housed at the same facility), Suicidal, Mentally ill, homosexuals, general population.

JM: What do you remember being the nicest and worst parts about the different blocks?
Dale: The nicest was being able to move about the block that you were housed in and the yard most of the day (except during count time, emergencies, or lock-down) The worst is that there were so many people moving about, that you always had to be aware of your surroundings for safety issues.
