Leisure Time

Interview with Eduardo

JM: What types of facilities were available to help pass the time?
Eduardo: there was a central tv. there were no books or magazines provide. I think some inmates were given an opportunity to go outside and smoke once a day but don't know how they got their cigerettes. I was told that long term guys got out to do some community jobs

JM: Did you have regular access to the entertainment or was competition fierce? Give details.
Eduardo: the competition was fierce for the tv controls. stationary and writing utensils were scarce and valuable. There were no options offered. It was boring and monotonous and I was again inclined to keep to myself. I would have enjoyed buying a book or something else to keep my mind occupied.

JM: Did you have a hard time staying in shape while in jail?
Eduardo: yes, you end up doing stretching exercise as there was no room to do conventional exercises due to all the mattresses on the floor

JM: How often did you get to go outside? What did you do outside if you were allowed to? If you were not allowed to go outside what could you do for exercise?
Eduardo: I opted not to go outside. It was cold out and we had no jackets and I was not a smoker so I stayed inside.

JM: Did the jail offer church services? If so, what were they like and when were they held?
Eduardo: I was not made aware of any religious services and wasn't there long enough to explore the possibility of religion
