Telephones

Interview with KENNY

JM: Did you have regular access to telephones?
KENNY: Yes, but the officers monitor the calls and cut off peoples calls for no reason when they get an outside connection. That is costly to their families. They give a courtesy call that only lasts like 15 or 20 seconds and you can't get but a few words out before the phone shuts off.

JM: What types of charges applied for calling people? How much money would you guess the average inmate spends per week on phone calls?
KENNY: I think it is like 10 mins for a local call for $1.00 to $1.25. Long distance has to be paid for by the person you are calling in increments of $25.OO.

JM: Did you need to buy phone cards to call out?
KENNY: No, family has to buy the cards just for you to get through when you call them.

JM: Did the jail screen your calls?
KENNY: They monitor all calls made.
