Telephones

Interview with Reggie, Sarah, Brenda, Mike and Will

JM: Did you have regular access to telephones?
Reggie: You have access during specific times of the day
Sarah: No. I only had access to a phone once a day or every other day when someone decided to take me out of solitary and put me in an empty holding cell with a phone. (I don't think they liked me telling people I was in jail for filing something without a lawyer.)
Brenda: had to wait for the phone
Mike: No. Sadly. A strong amount of inmates who have been there for a long time, guard the phones and call them "theirs" and won't let you use them.
Will: Phone access was a few hours each evening.

JM: What types of charges applied for calling people? How much money would you guess the average inmate spends per week on phone calls?
Reggie: I didn't use the phones but I do know the phones have an inflated rate plan
Sarah: I placed the call, and the party had to accept it. They (my neighbors mostly) were charged. I offered to reimburse them when I got out, but they would not let me. I think the charges were pretty high, like ordinary long distance calls. If I got a voicemail, hence the call was not accepted, I couldn't call that number anymore.
Brenda: 100.00 it so crazy you cant call you kids and family it suck really bad
Mike: 15 min call is like 20 dollars. i spent up to 200 once for 45 days just on phone call cards
Will: When I was there, you could not buy phone time. Your people on the outside had to first put money on the phone system before they could receive your calls. It was like 3 or 4 dollars for a five minute call, ridiculous.

JM: Did you need to buy phone cards to call out?
Reggie: Yes or whoever you called had to have a plan with the company that handled the calls
Sarah: Not where I was.
Brenda: yes even when you are in the holding cell
Mike: Yes very expensive calling cards, I would say.
Will: Your people on the outside had to buy them, although I have heard this has been changed now.

JM: Did the jail screen your calls?
Reggie: I am almost certain that they did
Sarah: I think there was a notice that the calls are recorded or monitored.
Brenda: yes why god know why
Mike: Yes they did, you may think they don't but your always under someones eye.
Will: All calls were supposedly monitored and/or recorded.
