Telephones

Interview with Karina and Taylor

JM: Did you have regular access to telephones?
Karina: Yes, when we were let out of our rooms.
Taylor: there were phones but you had to put money on the phone to talk to someone.

JM: What types of charges applied for calling people? How much money would you guess the average inmate spends per week on phone calls?
Karina: The person on the outside had to set up a payment plan called Paypal, and I actually had it. The minimum you can put on at a time was $25 plus a processing fee of $3 (payable by credit card or money order). A 10 minute call is $7. You could also call collect.
Taylor: it was like 2 dollars to accept the call and 30 cents per minute. they would probably spend about 50 a week.

JM: Did you need to buy phone cards to call out?
Karina: No.
Taylor: no, the people on the outside had to put money on the phone.

JM: Did the jail screen your calls?
Karina: Yes.
Taylor: yes they did.
