Leisure Time

Interview with Carlos

JM: What types of facilities were available to help pass the time?
Carlos: Laredo jail has a back yard type atmosphere for outdoor facillities, but I believe it is severly underfunded because its a basketball court with no basketballs, and everyone just walks in circles.

JM: Did you have regular access to the entertainment or was competition fierce? Give details.
Carlos: The only thing available besides the television was checkers and chess, and not all the pieces are there because inmates use these to burn and create ink.

JM: Did you have a hard time staying in shape while in jail?
Carlos: Staying in jail and finding it difficult to stay in shape is almost impossible, everyone has a designated time of excercise and everyone hypes each other up to work out.

JM: How often did you get to go outside? What did you do outside if you were allowed to? If you were not allowed to go outside what could you do for exercise?
Carlos: I went out once in the week I was there.

JM: Did the jail offer church services? If so, what were they like and when were they held?
Carlos: Jail is often very religious and is readily available, mostly wednsday and sundays.
