Telephones

Interview with pete, Jake, Billy and Kara

JM: Did you have regular access to telephones?
pete: Yes
Jake: Yes but they shut them down regularly, so not realy.
Billy: Yes telephones were accessible but very expensive to use.
Kara: Yes.

JM: What types of charges applied for calling people? How much money would you guess the average inmate spends per week on phone calls?
pete: Calling cards and collect calls
Jake: $3.00 to connect and about $1.00 for each minute.
Billy: usually like 5 bucks to connect.I remember a phone bill when i got home for 80 bucks for like 5 calls.
Kara: Expensive charges to the person you were calling. Minimum $20 a call; which was burdensome to family and friends.

JM: Did you need to buy phone cards to call out?
pete: Yes or else I would call home collect and they would give me a calling card number
Jake: We couldn't. WE WERE FORCED to call collect, & make other people pay for the calls. This was my biggest issue as it affects innocent people who care about their troubled loved ones.
Billy: no.
Kara: Yes unless someone outside is willing to accept charges.

JM: Did the jail screen your calls?
pete: Not sure
Jake: OF COURSE! I have no proof, but who would.
Billy: I dont know
Kara: Yes and quite well.
