Interview with Victor

JM: How many different blocks were there?
Victor: There were about 8 blocks total.

JM: Did they have names? If so, what were they?
Victor: The blocks were all labeled either alphabetically or numerically. It really depended on what year you were there. Now all the blocks letter names, but they were numerical years ago.

JM: Which types of inmates were housed in the different blocks?
Victor: There was a great deal of segregation in the jail. The white guys were housed a block over and the black guys in another. Hispanics were typically housed with whites. Age was not a factor upon which guys were separated.

JM: What do you remember being the nicest and worst parts about the different blocks?
Victor: The block I was housed in (where the blacks were housed) was typically more rowdy than where the whites and Hispanics were housed. The area where the whites were housed was not exclusively white. There were a few blacks there, but not in any significant numbers. It was a light-hearted atmosphere where they were housed. Then there was seg, where you went if you got into trouble. seg is meant to be a place to teach you a lesson, but if you'd been in the jail for a while and needed to "get away from it all," it could be a pretty decent place despite the fact that it was nasty as hell.
