Telephones

Interview with nelson and Amy

JM: Did you have regular access to telephones?
nelson: yes.
Amy: Yes 4 pay phones per pod and we could use them on any free time out. They didn't always work properly though and that was a drag.

JM: What types of charges applied for calling people? How much money would you guess the average inmate spends per week on phone calls?
nelson: not sure. you needed a calling card.
Amy: The calling cards or collect were all we could use. The calling cards cost about 5 bucks for a 15 minute call. I spent about 20 per week and calling the offices within the jail like the public defenders is free. so calling family is what gets expensive.

JM: Did you need to buy phone cards to call out?
nelson: yes.
Amy: Yes order them sunday nights if you had money on your books to pay and get them wednesday afternoon.

JM: Did the jail screen your calls?
nelson: not sure.
Amy: I'm sure they did but they won't tell you when you ask but the Public defenders and private attorneys warn about speaking on them about anything that has to do with your case or legal problems.
