Medications

Interview with Max

JM: Did you always have access to necessary medications?
Max: I was healthy and didn't need any meds. Once a month, you are allowed into a room with fingernail, toenail and hair clippers. This is the only time you can do this type of grooming. If you miss going in this room during your time you are out of luck for the month.

JM: How did you get your medications?
Max: Twice a day, a nurse comes to the block. Everyone who has meds lines up. They have to take their blue cup that was issued to each inmate with water in it. Nurse checks to make sure they swallow, but people still get away with taking pills back to their cells and selling them.

JM: What types of punishments were incurred for abuse of drugs? Did you ever witness this?
Max: I saw a guy that smuggled in tobacco, and another inmate ratted him out. The guy was sent to the hole.
