Pre-sentencing

Interview with Jamie and Karina

JM: Tell us about the pre-sentencing process:
Jamie: Most of the information you received was through other inmates. Being the first time arrested I never thought it would take so long. I had multiple trips that took all day only to be in court for five minutes. Most of the time although I spoke with a public defender I didn't know what was going on.
Karina: Well i went to jail for a warrant, i was suppose to be doing a program called drug court but i stopped going so i had a warrant out for me and so when i got arrested i had to wait a week or so for my counsler to come back out and reasses me and when she did then i had to go to court and wait for a bed at src.

JM: Did you have police stop by your house for questioning? If not please give us details on how you came to be arrested.
Jamie: No in our case the police knocked on the door when no one answered they walked right in and place my roommate in handcuffs. After not giving them permission to search the house they placed me in handcuffs and then went to obtain a search warrant
Karina: No, i was driving with friends and someone called the cops on us and then all of a sudden i see the cops behind us. We had gotten pulled over they didn't say why but they asked me my name and so i gave it to them and they seen i had a warrant.

JM: What was court like? Please give as many details as you recall.
Jamie: All together I had about 60 appearances in court. Starting early in the morning was shackled in cuffs transported to court waited most of the day. Brought in front of three different judges each time thinking i was going to get an answer and then sent back to holding.Transported to safety center. Followed by a strip search and back to my cell by the evening.
Karina: Waiting to go to court is what i dreaded the most you had to wake up early and get shackled and then wait for an hour or so for the van to come and pick us up. When at court it was nice to see other people other than your cellmates dressed in regular clothes. It was a long wait to get called for court.

JM: What were your original charges? What did you end up being convicted of?
Karina: my charges was Petty theft with priors , and after i did my program my charge got dropped and my felony got dropped to a misdeameanor
