Leisure Time

Interview with Gary

JM: What types of facilities were available to help pass the time?
Gary: They had the library and that was my favorite, I like to read and it makes the time pass fast so you can daydream and take your mind somewhere else than facing reality and thinking about when you can get out. The recreation yard was pretty good too, it was nice to be outside

JM: Did you have regular access to the entertainment or was competition fierce? Give details.
Gary: I did have access to outdoors but that's is where a lot of fights would happen and crazy deals so I would avoid that to stay out of trouble. And everything was always about race. So the competition was always crazy and people talking trash that would eventually turn bad

JM: Did you have a hard time staying in shape while in jail?
Gary: Not really, I would actually starve myself so I could loose weight and I just couldn't force myself to eat that nasty food

JM: How often did you get to go outside? What did you do outside if you were allowed to? If you were not allowed to go outside what could you do for exercise?
Gary: It was offered to go outside once a day but it also depends on the pod officer if he was in a good mood or not

JM: Did the jail offer church services? If so, what were they like and when were they held?
Gary: They were held every Wednesday and Sunday and everyone was encouraged to go but I never did or have interest
